Why Waiting to Feel Ready Is Keeping You Stuck

💜 Recovery Reminder

You don't have to feel fearless before you take your next step.

Sometimes confidence comes after action—not before it.

Introduction

Have you ever caught yourself saying:

"I'll start when I feel more confident."

"Maybe after things settle down."

"I just need a little more time."

On the surface, those thoughts seem reasonable.

Sometimes they are.

There are seasons when waiting is exactly what we need. Healing takes time. Learning new skills takes time. Preparing for change takes time.

But sometimes waiting quietly shifts into something else.

It becomes a habit.

And before we realize it, we're no longer preparing—we're postponing the life we want to build.

I've been there.

For years, I believed there would be a day when I'd finally wake up and feel ready.

The truth?

That day never came.

Main Teaching

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that there's a difference between preparing and postponing.

Preparation has purpose.

You're learning.

You're practicing.

You're asking questions.

You're building skills.

Every step is moving you closer to where you want to be.

Postponing feels different.

The finish line keeps moving.

"I'll do it after one more class."

"Maybe next month."

"Once I have more confidence."

"When life isn't so busy."

Nothing actually changes except the calendar.

One question I ask myself now is:

Am I preparing... or am I postponing?

Not because I'm judging myself.

Because awareness gives me choices.

Anxiety Loves to Disguise Itself

Sometimes what feels like "being responsible" is actually anxiety wearing a different outfit.

I know mine convinced me that I was too old.

That I'd missed my chance.

That I wasn't ready.

Anxiety has a way of sounding convincing because its job is to protect us.

The challenge is that it often mistakes discomfort for danger.

Now when those thoughts show up, I pause and ask:

Is this actually dangerous... or is it simply uncomfortable?

That one question helps me respond instead of react.

You May Already Be Growing

For a long time, I thought I wasn't making progress.

In recovery, I felt like I didn't have enough sobriety.

When I went back to school, I felt like I wasn't moving fast enough.

When I started rebuilding my career, I focused on everything that still needed to happen.

I rarely noticed how much I had already become.

Looking back, I realize the greatest growth wasn't waiting for me at the finish line.

It was happening every day I kept showing up.

Healing rarely feels dramatic while we're living it.

Most of the time, it looks ordinary.

Learning.

Trying again.

Adjusting.

Growing one small step at a time.

🌿 One Small Step This Week

This week, don't worry about changing everything.

Just notice.

When you catch yourself saying, "I'll do it when..." pause for a moment and ask yourself:

Am I preparing... or am I postponing?

No judgment.

Just curiosity.

Because awareness is often where healing begins.

✍️ Reflection Journal

Take a few quiet minutes this week and reflect on these questions:

  • Where have I been waiting to feel ready?
  • What am I hoping will change before I begin?
  • Am I preparing—or am I postponing?
  • What's one small step I can take this week, even if I don't feel completely ready?

Write whatever comes to mind without trying to fix or judge it.
